Ever since the day, over 20 years ago, that the woman (mother of my son) and I split up, I've regretted that -mutual- decision. The break-up was not because we didn't love each other, but it was because I was impossible to live with; too involved with work, simultaneously running 3 companies at once, almost always travelling, hardly ever at home and, I'm not proud to say; way too busy at the time with alcohol-abuse. I wrote 'a Day Without You' for therapeutic reasons, because thoughout the years of living alone I did miss her practically every day, always in silence, without mentioning it to any-one. In my head she transformed into a different, "ideal" woman, I used to talk to her, or often thaught "what would she do or not do" when making decisions, sometimes up to the point I laughed at myself in disbelief. Thus I hoped to cut off or at least minimize that silly behaviour by writing a song about it. And it worked; although I still often think of her, fondly, it no longer is an obsession. She became an important part of me and my past, and the fact we still love each other, the long history we share together (we fell in love at age 14), and of course the love we both have for our son, have all found a solid place of gratitude in my heart. 

I first wrote it in Dutch, ('Een Dag Zonder Jou') and immediately wrote the English translation.
